  • Currently the two term Maine Speaker of the House — having first been elected to the state house as a representative in 2012 — who is challenging Republican Senator Susan Collins


  • Born and raised in Rhode Island to an Indian and second generation Armenian mother


  • Bachelor of Arts in international affairs from George Washington University and served as an intern for U.S. Senator Claiborne Pell


  • Moved to Maine in 2004, and began her political career as Vice Chair of the Freeport Town Council


  • During her legislative career in the Maine House she championed Medicaid expansion; helped override Gov. LePage’s veto of a bill that made Narcan available over the counter to Mainers under the age of 21; helped pass a law that ensures insurance companies cannot discriminate against Mainers with pre-existing conditions and cracking down on pharmaceutical companies to increase drug pricing
